Toxins Found in “Non-Toxic” Nail Polish
The “non-toxic” nail polish that could be found in a number of salons in California are said to contain high levels of agents associated with birth defects.
Based on the report from the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the mislabeled nail products may potentially pose a danger to thousands of workers in more than 48,000 nail salons in California, as well as their customers.
The investigators randomly chose 25 brands of nail polish that are available exclusively at nail salons. These included a number of products that are advertised as free of the chemicals toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde. These three substances are also known as the “toxic trio.” According to regulators, exposure to large amounts of these chemicals may lead to developmental problems, asthma, and other illnesses.
The results of the investigation indicated that 10 of 12 products that claim to be free from toluene actually had it. In addition, four of the products had dangerously high levels of the substance.
The investigators also determined that five of seven products, which claimed to be “free of the toxic three,” had one or more of the agents, in significant levels.
Karl Palmer, pollution prevention performance manager of the DTSC who oversaw the report, shared: “We know there are exposures at salons, both to workers and customers, and we’re concerned about potential harm… Our strategy first and foremost is to shed light on the reality of what’s in these products and put this information out to everyone.”
The products that were mislabeled, according to the state, are: Sation 99 basecoat, Sation 53 red-pink nail color, Dare to Wear nail lacquer, Chelsea 650 Baby’s Breath Nail Lacquer, New York Summer Nail Color, Paris Spicy 298 nail lacquer, Sunshine nail lacquer, Cacie Light Free Gel Basecoat, Cacie Sun Protection Topcoat, Golden Girl Topcoat, Nail Art Top-N-Seal and High Gloss Topcoat.
