Bafta-Winning Actress Sentenced for Drunken Assault and Racial Abuse
A young actress who was recognized for her portrayal of a young offender in the UK show Misfits was sentenced on May 1st for a drunken racial assault against a cab driver.
Lauren Socha, 21, who plays Kelly Bailey in Misfits, admitted that she hit driver Sarkander Iqbal in the face, while screaming racist verbal abuse, in October. The incident happened after a 9-hour wine and lager binge.
Mr. Iqbal recounted how Socha called him a “Paki” and threatened: “You don’t know who I am.” The 52-year-old father of two, who has been a cab driver for 22 years, said that Socha had called him “every name under the sun.” He shared: “It was terrible. She called me a Paki, a dirty b******, told me to **** off back to my own country and asked what I was doing here because I was Asian.”
Socha’s tirade was triggered when Iqbal answered that he knew what he was doing, after Socha accused him of going the wrong way. Iqbal, however, was able to record part of the assault on his mobile phone; the actress could be heard screaming that she will get the driver’s family “lifted” out of the UK, before insulting him.
The actress had initially denied the assault, but changed her plea to guilty on the first day of her trial at Derby Crown Court.
She was sentenced to four months in jail, as well as 80 hours of unpaid work.
