Teen Mom Amber Portwood Gets Jail Time for Drug Charge
Amber Portwood, one of the stars of the MTV Reality Show “Teen Mom,” is facing two or more years of jail time in relation to a guilty plea she made on a felony drug charge.
Portwood was given jail time by Circuit Judge David Happe of Madison County, Indiana on Tuesday. Portwood had initially avoided going to jail with a plea that included undergoing drug rehab. She, however, dropped out of the program last month. Hence, Judge Happe ruled that she should serve the prison time imposed early this year.
Prosecuting Attorney Rodney Cummings revealed that the young mom was arrested on May 24, after being found to be in violation of her drug court probation requirements. Portwood had failed a urine test, and then lied about it.
Cummings shared further that the violation may not have resulted in the immediate revocation of the probations, “but she just opted out… I just don’t think she knew opting out meant five years in prison.”
It is likely that Portwood will spend two-and-a-half years of the five-year prison term before being released on parole for the remaining prison term. Cummings said that inmates get a one-day reduction from prison time for each day that is successfully served.
The “Teen Mom” star was initially arrested on felony domestic violence charges in November 2010, as a result of incidents depicted in the reality show. Last December, she was arrested again after a probation search yielded “a fairly sufficient amount of several different prescription pills” for which she did not have prescriptions. She spent more than a month in jail before reaching a plea deal that included the drug rehab program.
