Beating Back Pain Before it Starts
Back pain is considered the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office. An estimated 8 out of 10 people suffer from back pain at some point in their lives due to a number of different reasons, including stress, poor posture, obesity, and arthritis.
Moreover, back pain can directly result from disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss. If you do not have back pain yet, there are simple things you can do to keep it that way.
Sit Properly. This is probably the most common neglect among individuals. Whether you’re driving or working on your desk, maintaining correct sitting position can make a big difference. An ergonomically designed office chair will provide good support to your back. And if your work requires you to sit for longer periods of time, getting up and walking around every hour for a few minutes can take some of the stress off your back.
Don’t Smoke. A study shows that people who smoke have more low back pain compared to those who don’t. According to an expert, the possible explanation to this is because smoking reduces blood flow to the spine.
Lift the Right Way. The simple way of lifting things or even picking up the kids’ toys on the floor can cause back pain. If you need to lift a heavy suitcase, bend your legs not your back. For the lighter items, lean over them, slightly bend your knee, and extend the other leg behind you.
