How to Prevent Respiratory Infections in COPD Patients

Caring for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often require extra vigilance. After all, COPD patients are more vulnerable to infections that may result to further damage to the lungs.  The good news is there are a lot of things you can do to make sure that your loved one who has COPD avoids infections as much as possible.

Environment. Keeping the house clean and free from excess dust is very important in ensuring the health of a COPD patient. Bathrooms and sink should be free from molds and mildew. Likewise, make sure that cooking vents in the house are functioning properly to keep cooking fumes out. When going outdoors, be mindful of the place where air is largely polluted with tobacco smoke, car exhaust fumes, and other irritants that could enter the lungs.

Hand Washing. Remind a COPD patient, whether a family member or a friend, to frequently wash their hands with soap and warm water. This is highly important before preparing food, eating, taking medications, or starting breathing treatment. Additionally, it’s important to thoroughly wash hands after being around someone with a cold or flu.

Diet. Nutrition has crucial impact to the health of the a COPD patient. Prepare them foods from all food groups so they get balanced nutrition, and encourage them to drink plenty of fluids, unless their health care provider recommends specific dietary guidelines.
