The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society for Microbiology have published a laboratory testing guide to help combat inappropriate tests or problems with procedures that may result in misdiagnoses, unnecessary treatment, and higher health care costs.
Laboratory testing is important for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment of infection, but treatment can be hampered by problems during the testing phase.
Up to 70% of physicians’ diagnoses and treatment recommendations are due to laboratory test results, the organizations said, meaning it is imperative that those tests be performed accurately.
