Healthier Way of Eating at Work

Ideally, we need to compartmentalize the things that we need to do everyday. But with the busy schedules we keep and lifestyles we lead, we often need to multi-task in order to keep up with the things that we need to do. One of the activities that we usually do at the same time is to eat at our desks while making an attempt to work.

Ordinarily, it is not highly recommended to eat while working, since the practice is not considered healthy. For one, you will most likely not be able to make healthy choices. Someone who eats at his or her desk will probably be in a hurry when buying food, so there is a tendency to simply grab the first thing that one sees.

If you are someone who keeps food at your desk, there is also that temptation to overeat, and to eat mindlessly. Eating at your desk can result in crummies and excess food being breeding grounds for bacteria, and it will also prevent you from exercising a bit by being glued to your desk for the most part of the day. But if you really cannot help it, here are some tips to make eating at your desk just a bit healthier.

sandwichFirst off, bring your own healthy lunch, maybe a salad with grilled chicken breasts and vegetables or something like that. That way, even if you are distracted as you type madly away on the keyboard, you at least know what you are eating and watched the calories beforehand. Bringing your own lunch will also be cheaper compared to picking up the first takeout you see.

Despite having to eat at your desk, make sure that you stand up, stretch and walk around once in a while to keep your heart pumping. If you have to eat at your desk, at least eat with a friend. You may be trying to talk about work or you may be typing away, but having that other person with you will at least force you to take a break for a few minutes.

To ensure that your desk is bacteria-free, use a placemat while eating and give your desk a quick wipe down with disinfectant wipes before calling it a day.
