Eat Healthy Even When Eating Out July 3
A few weeks ago, we did a feature on meals that you may want to think of staying away from or ensure that you have someone to share with when eating out by highlighting this year’s recipients of the Xtreme Eating Awards. Before you think of eating out as a thing of the past though, we also would like to share with you certain meals that you can pick up from a fast food joint that are surprisingly healthy, courtesy of WebMD.
Before rattling off a few recommended dishes, let’s run through three basic rules that you need to keep in mind and abide by when eating out. First, you need to be wary about using condiments – that extra squirt of ranch sauce or mayo may find its way directly to your hips and stay there for eternity. Don’t overindulge on the ketchup or marinara, or ask for an extra dish or packet of honey-mustard sauce if you can help it.
Next, don’t readily give in to the temptation to either add or upsize your side dishes, especially if these are fried (read: fries and onion rings). If the side comes with the entrée and you are allowed to choose your side dishes, then go for fresh fruit cups or a light salad. Or better yet, bring your own healthy munchies, like carrot and celery sticks. Lastly, watch what you drink; you will totally negate all your healthy meal choices if you still go for the extra large super-thick milk shake with extra whip and chocolate drizzle. Go for unsweetened iced tea or diet soda instead, or maybe even simply stick to lemon water.
So what can you order at the nearest takeout and still manage to eat healthy? WebMD had 21 recommendations, and we will only share with you our personal favorites. In KFC, check out the Honey BBQ Sandwich and the Tender Roast Sandwich. At Carl’s Jr., we love the Charbroiled BBQ Chicken Sandwich. If you’re in the mood for Arby’s, try their Grilled Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich, but ask them to hold the mayo. But by far our favorite is In-n-Out Hamburgers – with just onions, mustard and ketchup, nothing else. Their attendants are very good at following your specifications anyway. Then we have our fill of lemons in our water, and we’re good to go, yum!
