The problem with lead poisoning in children is that it strikes silently. Although lead poisoning shows some symptoms in children, they are often mistaken for an entirely different disease altogether. The most common signs and symptoms of lead poisoning in children include display of aggressive behavior, irritation, difficulty in sleeping, listlessness, reduced sensations or numbness, lack of appetite, headaches, constipation, vomiting and abdominal pain.
It is important to get your house tested for lead if you have young children or pregnant women in the house. There are two ways to do this. You can send samples to a laboratory or buy a home testing kit. The condition of the house itself can show indicators of whether there is a possibility of lead contamination at the house or not. Homes built before 1975 are likely to be painted with lead-based paint or have lead pipes in the plumbing. It is also possible for homes less than five years old to have lead in the tap water.
