How Many Swine Flu Shots Do You Need? November 3
For pregnant women, all it will take is just one dose of swine flu vaccine, and they will be protected from swine flu. This is reportedly backed up by data collected by an independent panel of experts formed by the Health and Human Services Department purposely to monitor the safety of the vaccine against H1N1.
This is the first time that the independent panel met to review data. Leading the efforts is Anthony S. Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The data was reportedly based on the results of an analysis of blood samples from 50 pregnant women who were in their second and third trimesters. The samples were taken 21 days after the women received the first 15-microgram dose of the vaccine, and the analysis results showed that 92% of these women had a response indicating that they would be protected. Among those who received a double dose at 30 micrograms, 96% also experienced the same strong response, but the conclusion drawn by officials was that just the one dose would be enough.
The same thing does not hold true for children, though. Studies reportedly show that children aged 9 and younger will need two doses of the vaccine in order to achieve a response that is strong enough to protect them from the H1N1 virus. The conclusion was based on the results of blood tests taken from 583 children, which showed that only 25% of children aged 6 months to 35 months old and 55% of those aged from 3 years too 9 years old experienced a strong response that may be deemed enough to protect them from swine flu. These samples were taken 21 days after the children received the first 15-microgram dose.
Most adults, according to previous test results, would also need only one dose of the vaccine.
