Alexa Ray Joel Overdose: Was It Suicide?

Twenty-three year-old Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, was rushed to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan after paramedics received a 911 call from her apartment in Manhattan’s West Village at around 12:30 pm on Saturday.

The up and coming singer reportedly told the paramedics who responded to the call that “she has taken eight pills and was having difficulty breathing”. She was discharged a few hours after her mother arrived at the hospital, which was about 4:20 pm.

Alexa Ray JoelNews reports were hinting at a suicide attempt; law enforcement sources reportedly said that the overdose “appeared to be intentional”. Still, other reports say that a person close to the singer said that Alexa Ray took Traumeel, a homeopathic antihistamine.

Only Brinkley went to the hospital, although Billy Joel was communicating constantly via phone from his home in Sag Harbor. Billy Joel opted to skip going to the hospital so that the situation would not become a “circus atmosphere”. Joel and Brinkley’s nine-year marriage ended in 1994.

The young Joel is said to be battling with depression since breaking up with former boyfriend and bandmate Jimmy Riot. The breakup was a rough one, and the fact that her mother Christie Brinkley underwent a very public and ugly divorce with former husband Peter Cook and her father Billy Joel married a woman who was almost her age added to her emotional stresses.

She has initially attended New York University but dropped out and launched a singing career. She was due to perform at the New York Stock Exchange tree lighting.

Although police are reportedly ruling the situation as an “apparent suicide,” Alexa and Billy Joel’s personal publicist Claire Mercuri did not say anything confirming those rumors.
