Ambien Amidst the Tiger Woods Scandal December 12
It is very difficult not to think about Ambien these days, and it’s not just because all the talks about Tiger Woods and his alleged mistresses are all over every sort of media imaginable. More “people of substance” other than Tiger Woods, politicians included, have been linked to the medication.
Although Ambien can be classified under the rather sweeping group of medications known as sleeping pills or “sedative hypnotics”, its purpose is more defined as a sleep-inducing drug that reduces the time that it will take for someone to fall asleep. This is in contrast with other medications that also induce and maintain sleep such as benzodiazepines which are anti-anxiety medications and barbiturates, which are more commonly used for anesthesia.
Among the noted side effects of drug such as Ambien are changes in appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, stomach pain or tenderness – and unusual dreams. These side effects, though generally considered benign, are nevertheless undesirable and need to be shared with your physician.
There are, however, more complex side effects of Ambien, and one such potentially harmful side effect is experiencing parasomnias. These are described as certain actions and behaviors that one cannot control; a perfect example will probably be sleepwalking. There have been occurrences of going as far as driving, eating, making phone calls – and yes, even engaging in intimate acts – while on Ambien. These incidents, however, are described as rare – that is, if one takes Ambien under the context of a medical treatment plan and not as a recreational drug.
Another key thing to remember about Ambien is that it does not mix well with alcohol – something that some reports say that Tiger Woods had been drinking on the day of his accident. Since Ambien is a sleeping pill, consuming alcohol and taking Ambien at the same time can be dangerous since it can increase the sedative effect of the pill.
