Drug Testing for Alistair Overeem and Brett Rogers? May 15
MMA Fighter Alistair Overeem, the Strikeforce heavyweight champion, is set to go up against challenger Brett Rogers at Strikeforce “Heavy Artillery” on Saturday, but just like anyone who has noticeably bulked up, Overeem is dogged by rumors of performance-enhancing drugt use. His opponent Rogers was quoted in a post on Sherdog.com: “I’m a big guy myself, but I know I’m not going to blow up that much in that short amount of time. It’s questionable to me. Hopefully, the athletic director and the commission can resolve that.”
So far, the Missouri Office of Athletics has commented that it will be testing for use of “all illegal and unprescribed drugs,” as shared by the Office commissioner himself, Tim Lueckenoff. As to exactly when testing will happen – or how often – has not been discussed; the same holds true for the type of testing that will be involved. If urine analysis will be employed, it will only be able to check the presence of steroids and other drugs, but not of the human growth hormone.
Overeem, however, is unperturbed. Both he and Rogers have said that they will have no problems with subjecting themselves to any testing that will be imposed on them for the fight. Overeem is confident that a negative test will dispel everyone’s doubts: “People can say what they want. People can say what they think. I’m going to have to pee just like Brett is going to have to pee just like all the other (fighters) are going to have to pee. Then that pee will be tested.”
