Testing It Up

Apples Top List of Produce with Pesticide Contamination

There may be a sliver of truth in Snow White’s poisoned apple, although this one is most certainly not the handiwork of an evil and vain queen.

According to a report released by the Environmental applesWorking Group (EWG), a public health advocacy group, apples are currently ranked at the top of the list of produce contaminated by pesticides. After an analysis of 53 fruits and vegetables, it was determined that 92 percent contained two or more pesticides.

Sonya Lunder, an analyst for EWG, shared: “We think what’s happening to apples is more pesticides and fungicides are being applied after the harvest so the fruit can have a longer shelf life… Pesticides might be in small amounts, but we don’t know what the subtle, long-term effects of many of these pesticides are yet.”

Other fruits on the list are strawberries and imported grapes.
