Hydroxycut Dietary Supplement Recalled Pending Assessment of Alleged Liver Risk

Published by:

Kathleen Doheny of WebMD Health News reports that 14 Hydroxycut products, a popular brand of supplements that include fat burners and energy enhancers have been voluntarily recalled by their manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences USA. The action came after the FDA reportedly received 23 reports of liver injuries that ranged from jaundice to death that may be linked to Hydroxycut products.

The following products have been recalled, as announced via a news conference given by the FDA:

– Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
– Hydroxycut Caffeine-free Rapid Release Caplets
– Hydroxycut Hardcore Release Caplets
liver– Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
– Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
– Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
– Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets
– Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
– Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
– Hydroxycut Hardcore Ready-To-Drink
– Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
– Hydroxycut 24
– Hydroxycut Carb Control
– Hydroxycut Natural

While the interim chief medical officer of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the FDA, Linda Katz, MD, encouraged consumers at the news conference to refrain from using the recalled Hydroxycut products, the FDA has yet to determine exactly what ingredients in the products are associated with liver problems.

Among the adverse effects reported in the 23 cases brought to the attention of the FDA are liver damage, elevated liver enzymes and liver damage that has lead to a liver transplant. The death of a nineteen year-old male that occurred in 2007 is also being attributed to the use of Hydroxycut. Other health problems that are also being associated with Hydroxycut are cardiovascular problems, seizures and rhabdomyolysis, or serious muscle damage that may lead to kidney failure.

The product recall, according to a statement posted on the company website, is in the interest of consumer safety pending the results of investigation into the products. The company has other products, such as Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia, which are not affected by the recall. We may receive an update on this issue in the coming weeks as tests are conducted.
